Scenic Motorbike Rides "Motorcycle Perfection"
Queen Mary Falls
Heading west from Rathdowney, and then south-west through the Border Ranges, takes you on a tour of great diversity and beauty.
After driving 20kms along Boonah-Rathdowney Road, passing through the small town of Maroon, turn left into Burnett Creek Road. This will take you past Maroon Dam, the major water reservoir for the Beaudesert area, and popular venue for fishing and water sports. Once past the dam the road begins to climb the ranges via Fletcher and White Swamp Roads through some beautiful farm land and eucalypt
forest.
Stunning views of Southeast Queensland are seen as you drive up to the border gate. On the NSW side of the range you descend to the Killarny Road where you again climb up through eucalypt forest and pass through another border gate back to Queensland.
Four-wheel drive enthusiasts can take the track through Killarney Gorge to Killarney and back via Queen Mary Falls. Those in conventional vehicles can take the high road that ascends through the rainforest before coming out onto a deep, rich, red-soil plateau. From several lookouts, a broad panorama of the headwaters of the Condamine River can be taken in.
A short drive through high land pasture and forest brings you to Queen Mary Falls National Park. A short walk takes you to the magnificent Queen Mary Falls, or you can walk the longer 2km circuit past the Falls. Beyond here the road descends to Killarney. To make your journey a round trip, continue south to Legume and then follow the Mt Lindesay Highway through Woodenbong, back over the border,
to Rathdowney. There are some sections of gravel road in NSW.
Alternatively, as a return journey, traverse The Head road that hugs the border rabbit fence, following the upper reaches of the Condamine as it meanders down the valley. At the far end of the valley, the road continues over the escarpment into the valleys of the Scenic Rim. From here you can continue to Boonah, a country town full of character and charm, where most services are available. Call
into the Fassifern Valley Visitor Information Centre in Centennial Park on the outskirts of town.
Allow a full day for this drive, take your time and enjoy the experience.
